Questions about Argentina!

Hello everyone,

I´m new to the forum. I´m from the USA and I live in Barcelona, Espanya (yeah that´s how it´s spelled here in Catalunya). Right now I´m studying Spanish at the Universitat de Barcelona in a program for extranjeros. I am making my way toward a medical degree, and I´m trying to make my plan for 2009.

Firstly I will say, I am not interested in studying in my country for various reasons. If you want to talk about them, send me a message.

I´ve been researching different medical programs in the (huge) spanish-speaking world and I´m curious about Argentina. I have friends here in Barcelona from Argentina who speak very highly of the education there. Particularly a friend who studied medicine at UNC (Córdoba). She said the education there was equal to the education I would receive here in Barcelona. Researching Córdoba led to researching Buenos Aires and la UBA, which also looks like a stellar program for medicine! Can anyone give me their opinions about the medical education there? I´m interested in everyone´s thoughts, but particularly the experience of foreigners like me. What is the quality of education? How are the facilities? How is the instruction? If you have graduated, how has your experience been post-grad. Have you found work?

I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday, and she was warning me about the hierarchy of degrees. About the way that the world looks at different degrees. For example, if I have a degree from Argentina I may have fewer opportunities than a person with a degree from a European institution. I think she has a point with that one, but I always tend to rebel against these kinds standards. I will go for the education if it´s high quality. I won´t lie, Argentina is very appealing because it is economically feasible for me. It´s much cheaper than Barcelona to live there and my savings go a lot farther there, for sure. So what do I do? If anyone can advise me in ANY way, I would love to hear your ideas! I already made a post like this in the UB forum in Spanish but I haven´t received any response yet!

Hi Stephen! I got my degree on Medicine last May in the University of Buenos Aires UBA - I can say it has a lot of difficulties..and only 15% of the ppl that enters can get their degree, because it´s a matter of perserverance...it´s not only studying, but also standing the atmosphere itself!! Teachers are very very strict - this unviersity is the highest leveled in Latin America and one of the best in whole America - not because I was formed in it, but that is what statistics say!! on the other hand, I think the girl that told you that thing that we are missvalued in the world, i can totally reject that...we have thousands and thousands of doctors that emigrate to work in the best projects around the world; here doctors are not as well paid as they´re in Europe, but they´re really wanted in other countries to form investigation teams for example. If you have to choose between Bueno Aires and Córdoba, well...that´s difficult to say...most ppl come to Buenos Aires cuz it´s better known around the world, and you have all the "life" here. But Cordoba is a very nice province, quieter than here.
In UBA you have to make a course with 6 subjects (Maths, Physics, Biology, Philosophy, History and Sociology, and Chemistry); this last 1 year...if you do alright in all, you enter Medicine. The first year you hv Anatomy, Histology, Embriology, Genetics and Cellular Biology, and Mental Health. The second year you have Chemistry and Physiology (dunno how u write it!!). The third year you´ve got Microbiology (bacterias, virus, fungis, parasits, inmunology), Pathology I, Pharmacology I, and Bioethics I. Then you start to rotate in hospitals doing all the specialities. All in all it last 6 years + 1 year of course of entance. After that you´ve got to do the Internado Anual Rotatorio, which are practices, and then you sit for the all in all exam and get your matriculation. Well...jaja, I wrote too much!! I study in the univesity del comahue in Río Negro, and is a very excellent program. Since the second year you go to the hospital to learn.

You have to know that are seven years the study, the first one you have to do the introdunting cycle (biology, fisics, quemestry, introduccion al estudio de la medicin).

In the next year the carrear divided in three cycles. The first one is ciclo biomedico that is for two and a half year, and you have anatomy, histologia- genética- embrilogía- biología molecular, bioquimica, fisiologia, taller A (they give you a case that you have to solve) and atencion primaria de la salud; in the second year you have microbiología, patología, bioetica, relacion medico- paciente, atencion primaria de la salud 2, taller B; and in the half year you have semiología, taller c and farmacologia.
In the ciclo clinico you have medicina 2, pediatria, ginecologia, antropologia legal, and psiquiatria.
And in the last cycle is a resume of the carrear.

If you want to go to the UBA, I think, you need a visa, maybe you should check on www.fmed.uba.ar to make sure.
And make sure you learn Castellano and not Catalan to come to Argentina because those languages are preety different from each other.
I'm not going to lie, UBA is hard, intense and prestigious. Nobody (anywhere) will dare to say you have a "low quality education" if you get the UBA degree. So it's VERY hard, it's not a pic-nic, but it's worth.
So, do your thinking and choose thinking about all your options

Hello everyone!

Thank you for all of your advice! I know there is a big difference between Catalan and Castellano! A huge difference. I was studying both when I first got to Barcelona, but I've stopped seriously studying Catalan because Castellano is so much more valuable for me, and I really want to learn super fast.

I have heard that the UBA is a difficult school, with very strict and serious teachers, and a very intense program in general. Honestly, that sounds fantastic! I have a lot of studying to do before I can pass the CBC.

Thanks for your help! Maybe we'll see each other in Argentina some day!

I will try to write as beter as i can.
Well as one someone told you UBA is the most famous university in Latinamerica, is the only one that achieved the Nobel Price, 3 of them were from medicine. It's also true that only a few get the degree, why? I can't really explain. I guess it's because here things are very hard, the goverment doens't suppont it financially and things are kind of difficult because of it.
Other important thing is that here a lot of foreign students study here, mostly because it's free.
I'm about to pass to 2nd year an d I've seen lot of my classmates quit during my 1st year. Class are very hard, for example in anatomy class we have exams at the of everyclass.
I think it would be great if you choose this university, I don't say this because I study here, I say it because you'll have the chance to see people who really want to make de difference studing medicine and go through a lot to difficulties to achive that.
I must warn you things here aren'teasy at all but I think that's what make UBA so special.
I wish you had understood something I wrote. I'm not very good at writing.
I'd love to keep in touch with you, It wolud be great to change ideas with someone that is so far from here.

But...i´m really interested to know the reason because you don´t like the idea of studying in the Usa.

I just asking this, because i´m interested in knowing differents situations of students of health sciencies around the world.

Hi Stephen, a little late my reply but...
I'm a foreign like u , cuz I 'm from Chile and study in Argentina.
Since my experience, is a very good place to study, a nice country and to live here is cheap in comparision with another countries. Great life-style, amazing gastronomics and the beautiest girls all over the world! Is that not enough reason to came here? Well, i addition u can get first level teachers, with great tradition and first line investigators. If u dont' know Argentina's has many Nobel prize in sciences, and many of the university teacher was disciples of these guys. About the infrastructure is not like in US or Europe, but it doesn't matter if u can get big quality in education.
If u need more info about the documents for get teh permnission to stude here, don't hesitate to contact me.

Mira, estoy acá en Buenos Aires. Empiezo con la UBA XXI en una semana (¿o dos?) y no puedo esperar. En serio, he esperado tantoooo tiempo a estudiar y finalmente puedo empezar! Será barbaro. Vivo en la provincia ahora, que es una putada importante viajar a la ciudad, y busco un cuarto en la ciudad. Conoces a alguien que tiene un cuarto libre? ¿Tenés unos consejos sobre buscando donde vivir en BsAs? No tengo un montón de mango, pero sería copado vivir más cerquita...

Bueno, también, si quieres juntarnos a tomar algo y hablar de la facu, de chile (¡viví con chilenas en BCN!), de BsAs o yankilandia también, avísame. Si sabes algo de un cuarto o depto compartido, porfa avísame.

Sí estoy acá y joya, te lo juro. Bueno, el tiempo...bleh. No es una isla tropical como esperaba (jajaja, joda joda), pero voy a sobrevivir.

Bueno, Dra, aconséjame...¿como vivo en la jungla porteña? ¿Donde puedo comer un buen asado? Aunque...no te quiero decir que no como carneeeee!!!! AHHHHH!!!! HORRORRRR!!! jajaja. Bueno vivo con una Argentina y comimos un asado con su familia. Pero fue la sexta vez en 13 años que comí carne. En serio.

Perrrrroooo si tenés un consejo sobre donde puedo encontrar un cuarto más central sería barbaro. Vivo en Haedo, provincia, ahora y es una PUTADA irme a la ciudad. También mi compañera acá, aunque es simpatica, es difícil vivir con ella. Entonces busco otro sitio donde vivir...consejos? ¿Algo que no supere $500 pesos?

Bueno, y si querés juntarnos a tomar un cafe o cervezita o cualquier cosa, avísame. Soy profesor de ingles y te puedo ayudar si tenés dudas o querés practicar.

Estoy interesado en el pensamiento de todos, pero especialmente la experiencia de los extranjeros como yo. ¿Cuál es la calidad de la educación? ¿Cómo son las instalaciones? ¿Cómo es la instrucción? Si usted se ha graduado, ¿cómo ha sido su experiencia post-graduado. ¿Ha encontrado trabajo?

Yo estaba hablando con un amigo mío de ayer, y ella me estaba advirtiendo acerca de la jerarquía de grados. Acerca de la forma en que el mundo mira a diferentes grados. Por ejemplo, si tengo un grado de la Argentina pueda tener menos oportunidades que una persona con un grado de una institución europea. Creo que tiene un punto con el que uno, pero yo siempre tienden a rebelarse contra estas normas tipo. Voy a ir para la educación si es de alta calidad. No voy a mentir, la Argentina es muy atractiva porque es económicamente viable para mí. Es mucho más barato que Barcelona para vivir allí y mis ahorros van mucho más allá, seguro. Entonces, ¿qué debo hacer? Si alguien me puede aconsejar en cualquier forma, me encantaría escuchar sus ideas! Ya hice un post como este en el foro de la UB en español, pero no he recibido ninguna respuesta todavía!

para doc Nanis: yo estudio en la UBA en buenos aires
son seis años y se hace dificil siempre te lleva un poco mas...
en general los docentes son excelentes y te vinculan mucho con la investigacion
en los primeros años somos bastante alumnos por aula pero se lleva bien...
en cuanto a las instalaciones estoy segura que dejan bastante que desear en cuanto a barcelona acordate que argentina es un pais del tercer mundo
ademas de como profesional te forma como persona y tambien en el caracter
lo mas importante es que (hablo por mi) la gente te va a ser sentir como en tu casa
